Core Responsibilities
- Perform multi-step organic synthesis inside laboratory fume hoods using round-bottom flasks, condensers, and controlled heating setups.
- Monitor chemical reactions through TLC plates and document progress in laboratory notebooks.
- Carry out reaction work-up using separation funnels, filtration assemblies, and solvent recovery units.
- Purify synthesized intermediates through column chromatography and crystallization techniques.
- Record experimental observations, yields, and conditions within electronic laboratory notebooks.
- Compile synthesis data sheets and submit completed experiment records for internal review.
Skills & Technical Exposure
- Use of NMR spectroscopy for structural confirmation and impurity evaluation.
- Application of TLC methods for reaction monitoring and compound purity checks.
- Handling of organic synthesis glassware, heating mantles, and inert gas lines.
- Operation of rotary evaporators for solvent removal.
- Use of SciFinder for literature review and synthetic route reference.
Experience Context
- Works within an API research laboratory handling multiple synthesis batches at gram to kilogram scale.
- Supports development timelines where delayed synthesis directly postpones downstream analytical and scale-up work.
- Engages with controlled substances and regulated intermediates requiring complete laboratory documentation.
